Veronique Laurent acknowledges in her oil paintings the significance of trees which seems to be forgotten in our modern times. Nowadays, in the hectic urban life, these majestic plants are merely taken for granted. This hasn't been the case in former times. In the older days, trees were integral to our lives. Among several communities at each childbirth, for instance, the placenta was buried in a hole in the ground and a mgomba (banana tree) was planted on top. For thousand of years, trees weren't only a symbol of fertility but of strength, growth, and resurrection as well. Trees have been worshipped in Europa and in Africa alike, and the artist, being born in Burundi to a Tanzanian mother and a Belgian father, embraces those different influences in her colourful paintings.

Veronique Laurent was born in Burundi to a Tanzanian mother and a Belgian father. She did her first oil paintings in her early teens. Oil paintings have been her only medium since then, though, two years ago, she discovered the quickness in transparency in acrylic colors. Veronique likes to call hersef a self-taught artist though she was lucky to have lessons in live drawing at Konstfack in Stockholm, Sweden, and l'Academia degli beli arti in Perugia, Italy. After a nomadic life in a "no-man's land" between two continents, she finally rediscovered her own self and a true source of inspiration in Tanzania.
